Your work is outstanding in it's level of detail and artistic excellence. Each image is both beautiful and thought provoking. Your mastery of the medium places your work at the very top of the digital artwork on the Internet. How long did it take you to reach this level of expertise? Are you self taught or did you attend formal classes?

Michalczyk Thank you. I started creating computer graphics on Amiga 600 in 1993 using Deluxe Paint mostly. In 1995 I bought a PowerMac and started making 3D and continued with 2D graphics. I have been freelancing since 1996 and in 1998 completed one major project :

as a computer game 3D artist. Right now I'm working as a conceptual and texture artist on a SF 3D game Unreal 2. And yes, I'm completely self taught.

What type of hardware and software do you use? How long does it take to render a high resolution image on your machine?

Michalczyk I'm currently using a Pentium 2 based system which is of the followinghardware setup: single P2 350Mhz cpu, 256MB of RAM, total 32GB of hd(IDE) storage, Matrox G200/8Mb gfx card, a Sony 17 monitor and a small wacom tablet. As for software, I'm mostly using 3DS MAX for all 3d work, Photoshop for all 2d work (textures, retouching, etc) and Bryce for landscapes.

The rendering time of a given scene is mostly dependent on the complexity of the scene, the size of the output and the hardware performing the actual rendering. On my current hardware, the Suburbs 2100 image took about 15 minutes to render in the 1024x768 resolution using the default rendering engine.

Where do you get inspiration for your work. How much time does it take you to complete an image from start to finish? DO you have a set idea of what you want to create or do you "flow" with the scene as it develops?

Michalczyk My inspiration comes mostly from nature, cities, movies and other artists works. As for how long it takes me to finish an image, there is no precise answer to that, as this is highly dependent on the complexity of the image, difficulty level, and the hardware involved.

For example the Suburbs 2100 took me around 230 hours to complete, which as you can see is quite detailed image. On another hand, a quite simple image like Cosmic Fantasy, which was done in Photoshop on a PPro 180Mhz/64MB or RAM, took perhaps 10 hours.

What are some of you favorite websites?

Michalczyk

I don't surf the web much, but the sites I visit from time to time is 3D Artists (<http://www.raph.com/3dartists/>).

Do you think digital artwork will ever hang in fine art museums such as the Louvre in Paris?

Michalczyk

Of course it will. It is only a matter of time before this will happen. The digital medium is new and so are most of the users of the medium. Once the digital art world will mature and gain acceptance and respect among the general public, I'm sure that the best digital artwork will be shown even in the most respected museums around the world.

After all the digital medium is just that - a medium. A new set of tools for the artist to use, and the artist is the one who creates the art, not the medium.

Digital

Have you worked on any commercial projects?

Michalczyk Yes, the biggest one being a computer adventure game, The Longest Journey <http://www.longestjourney.com/>).

Another big one which I'm currently working on is a 3D action game : Unreal 2.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

Michalczyk I have lots :)

Especially from the Realism period of 19'th century. To name the names I remember:

Ilya Repin, Jan Matejko, Canaletto (ok, that's 16'th century), Iwan Schischkin, Konstantin Makowski. Rembrandt also.

>From currently living artists I admire the works of Howard Terpning and many SF/Fantasy artists like:

Michael Whelan, Rodney Matthews, Syd Mead, Frank Frazetta and others. I

must say that my taste is of a very wide range.

Do you think the Internet is having an effect on artists world wide? Has it had an effect on you and your work?

Michalczyk Absolutely. If the internet(or more precisely the web) didn't exist, I wouldn't be where I'm today.

The only publicity I ever got in the beginning was only through the internet. In fact 99% of my assignments and job offers come through the internet. I think the same is true for many other digital artists.

What is your personal favorite of all the images you have created ?

Michalczyk I think it must be Suburbs 2100, because of the atmosphere, cool perspective and details.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

Michalczyk I want to become better at 2d drawing and start including more humans in my images. I want to be able to create really realistic images without having to rely on 3D much. Perhaps sometime I will be good enough to become a digital matte painter.
